Ok. Home from call late today, due to an impossible goose chase I was sent on about 20 minutes before we were supposed to leave. I did manage to speak to someone at all the major hospitals in the twin cities today though. So that was nice... Let's just say getting a doc to do a GI consult on a child is not as easy as it should be. Anyways, one nap later I was up and ready to prepare for tomorrow. Whats tomorrow you say?
Hint.
I fly out for interview numero uno tomorrow. Yikes. Breathe deeply and often. Gosh, but not so often that I hyperventilate and have no CO2 to speak of. Ok, my mind is revving up to run wild. Lets tame myself with some ultra-unreality. aka Grey's. tootles.

10 Things on Thursday:)
It's a rainy gloomy doomy day. However, my resident raised the possibility of going home tomorrow at 8 pm!!!! Knock on wood, keep your fingers crossed, throw in a hail mary... lets hope
1. What are you going to be for Halloween?
I'm going to be a med student I guess. I will probably wear a blue t-shirt with bats on it and scrub pants. Oh yes, and magical halloween socks.
2. Have you ever been on television?
Other than public access band/choir concerts, nope.
3. Do you have a toilet paper preference?
I like charmin. And if the toilet paper rolls over. Under drives me absolutely crazy.
4. When you’re pregnant, will you find out the sex of the baby? (Or if you’ve already had babies, did you find out the sex?) Why or why not?
Yes absolutely. Because I need to know everything. I like to plan. I hate surprises.
5. What are three items that every kitchen must have?
non stick skillet, knives, cutting board. Or stove, sink, fridge?
6. Do you enjoy Christmas shopping?
I love it. I love everything about Christmas. Getting a coffee and strolling around the mall is fantastic. I also do a lot of shopping online, so I have months to run across the perfect gift :)
7. What is your go-to recipe? (The thing you cook more than anything else because it’s easy and mindless.) Please share the recipe.
For myself: roasted or sauteed veggies in either balsamic or tamari. For company: This gem Except I use pork loin and dried cherries. holy yum.
8. Do you sleep on your back, belly, or side?
On my belly, with my arms straight down by my side, like some sort of strange paralyzed zombie. 2nd post making me think of zombies...
9. How do you feel about Tom Cruise?
He's a wackadoodle. I don't "feel" much about him. I guess he turns my tum a bit. That glassy crazed look in his eyes. yikes.
10. What books are in your “books to read” stack?
An entire shelf: Next up is wasted. Then probably Stiff my Mary Roach, then likely Water for Elephants...and on and on.
Memorize viral exanthems? Workout? meh. I'll do it later.

zzzZZ brain zombie
Why am I awake at 12:30? Shouldn't I be getting my beauty rest for a big day of newborn exams tomorrow. Yes. that would be responsible. Unfortunately, dang netflix keeps popping up in my mailbox. I'm halfway through season one of in treatment. I feel compelled to finish disks so I can get a new delivery by Saturday. No mail on Sunday is such a waste of TV brain zombie potential!
Anyways. Whats up guys? Do you have a Halloween costume yet? I'm on call Halloween am. I hope no goofballs doing ridiculous things and end up in the PICU this weekend, but you never know.
I have two more call nights left this rotation. woot. I'm getting a wee bit tired of that dog and pony show. Call may or may not go as follows: Admit patient and make up a plan. Tell your res your plan. They tell you you're wrong and you should really do x. Tell the attending the plan is x. Then have the attending FREAK out and tell you that would kill people. OMG. My original plan, created by my feeble brain cells at 2 am, was in fact correct. Whatever. At least I don't have kids. But if I did holy moly. I'd probably fly them to Europe if they got sick. (I might be crabby)
I have some new recipes to post. Not now. I'm sleepy. I was also visited by a gluten free bread fairy. I kid you not. Full recap of that serendipitous event to come. Are you feeling cheated? I'll leave you with some loverly pics.
Mmmmhmmm. Feeling sassy.
When all else fails. Keep this one in your back pocket.

Math, Brussel sprouts and Dancing.
Day 2 was not much of an improvement. I am thinking my crabby factor might be increasing, gasp, exponentially. I'm going to refrain from discussing any specifics. Lets just say...karma's a you know... Just be nice to people. Kindness is directly proportional to happiness. jeepers.
The brussel sprouts are delish btw. Round two in foods that used to make me gag was a success. I roasted them with a drizzle of balsamic. Unfortunately the pan is filthy with permanent petrified vinegar. Calling all infomercials. Help!
Recipe to kick the med school grumpies.
Play song fairly loudly. Shake your booty. Simmer down. Repeat. The dance moves demonstrated in this video are, in fact, particularly effective.

Hanging in there
I had a doozie of a call. Mostly because we switched senior residents at 7 am. Let's just say, we traded a solid leader for a weak link. Shoot. I hope tomorrow runs a wee bit smoother. I'm not super into feeling in charge of the pediatric ICU and the Burn Center after being there for 30+ hours.
The man-child has a little H1N1 and therefor received a delivery of soup, gatorade, oreos and milk. I think that's that target equivalent of tamiflu, but I'd have to double check.
I have brussel sprouts and squash roasting. Hanging in there. Back at it in T - 7 hours. Ready to play doctor.

Mega post.
Mega post. Be prepared. There is a whole lota Suzanne comin' your way. Zip-a-dee-do-dah! Zip-a-dee-ay!
I mentioned that my good friend Dan has a family farm. He generously provides honeycomb whenever his bees have some to spare. He also delivers bags full of farm grown veggies in the fall. Holy yum. I've been roasting veggies all week long. Enter stage left: qwerkyqook approved onions. Super cute! Super delish. Saute in oil slowly. yum, drool drool.
Squash One
Squash Two. Rinse the squash, chop it in half or quarter, whichever you fancy. Then scoop out the seeds and roast face down in about an inch of water at about 400 for about 30 min. These things are not exact. I preheat the oven, slice the babes up, and throw them in. I then do a variety of activities which may or may not include, yoga, vacuuming and showering. By the time I've finished, the squash has cooked. It's done when you can "stick a fork in it". This is hard to mess up.
Scoop your pulp. I usually eat it plain. Sometimes I add sesame oil and tamari. Sometimes I sprinkle Chinese 5 spice on it. Be creative. Feel the energy. Get down and experiment. Your soul will want savory, spicy or sweet - go for it. Interestingly, I distinctly remember gagging involuntarily while trying to eat squash as a child. It was one of those " I really don't care. Sit at that dinner table until you finish your squash" moments. My parents were good with enforcing the rules :) Delve deeper into my strange childhood choices and you discover that as a baby I gobbled up squash like there was no tomorrow. My mom even brought my to the doctor afraid I was jaundiced. Nope. Too much squash gave my glowing complexion it's orange hue.
Also gifted to me were a plethora of perfect peppers. All kinds of colors. This week I got a bit crazy and finished the saute by adding a bit of tamari. Mmmm salty goodness.
Into the oven with the sqasheroo went sliced eggplant. Drizzle your aubergine with balsamic. Très sophistiqué . These disks of goodness cook a bit faster than squash. So maybe remove them after vacuuming, before your shower :) This is basically how to survive spending 35 hours at hotel Henne every 3 days. Roast up, and pack away. I have a ginormous cooler lunch box. I plug on. Me and my squash, we do ok.
Here. Enjoy this video while I entertain myself answering these 10 facts. Lisa and Abby did it, so must I.
I watched this entire video and was so perplexed. A) how did Harmar Superstar get these celebrities in his video? B) I have never seen him sing a song without his beer belly making an appearance...what's with the spacesuit covering up his lovely lady lump?
1. If you won the lottery, what would be your one random, off-the-wall purchase?
A cabin on Leech Lake (sounds nasty, it's actually heaven on earth)
2. What is popular now that you just don’t get?
Intense and irrational fear of vaccines. People. Relax.
3. What would your last meal, you know, if you were ever about to be executed and you got to choose that sort of thing?
I would want a smorgasbord. Ready? Olives, Parmesan cheese, ketchup, Pizza, Tucci Benucch's chopped salad, Margie's Carmel chocolate brownies, Mom's poppy-seed cake, my mom/grandmas lemon Christmas cookies and rhubarb slush. Then I guess I'd probably puke right before execution.
4. When is it okay to start listening to Christmas music?
The day after Thanksgiving, I follow rules.
5. How do you feel about facial hair on men?
I judge on a case by case basis. Sometimes it really works.
6. McDonald’s or Burger King?
I guess McDonald's. Although I haven't purchased anything except redbox DVDs there for over 2 years.
7. What kind of soap do you use?
Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap. Love it.
8. What movie can you watch over and over and never get tired of?
Harvey Girls. The squid and the Whale. Me and you and everyone we know. The Little Mermaid (good tunes)
9. Favorite beverage?
NA: diet coke
Alcohol: pinot noir
10. What do you want for Christmas?
skinny jeans and suede boots. Fashionsita!
Großer Gott! Bis dann!

Old man winter? How rude, you weren't invited.
It's snowing in MN. Real snow. Like lots. It's October 12. This is a cold state, and we do have our famous...
Halloween Blizzard.
But brrr. Don't let the snow get you down! I was given a gigantic bag of farm fresh veggies from my good friend Dan. I took some pictures, so hopefully I'll post my veggie ventures soon. But i'll say this. Squash is roasting away in my oven. yum yum de yum. So don't let the snow turn you into a gloomy kerploppus . Fire up your oven and roast away!
If that doesn't work, look at these pretty pictures :)
carpe diem! And don't forget your mittens.

Plugging away
so. I guess running in the fall is fun. The leaves crunch under my feet and the streets are so quite. I am slower in the cold though. I hope my airways forgive me. I think I may resemble Pheobe a bit more than usual as the temps drop.
Call was really quite uneventful, other than the fact that it was a dark weekend...
Meaning: If you are on call on saturday... You don't get a day off for, oh, 14 days. breathe. things are ok.
Today actually was warmer, and sunnier, and joggable. Plus I had a netflix delivery waiting for me. Things are good :)
I haven't been cooking. But check the email pic I got this morning from the boy. What is going on? Twilight zone... Impressive no?
Back to the grind tomorrow at 7:15. But it's ok. Most of these :kiddos, munchinks, peanuts (new one!) are pretty dang cute.

Octo-brrrr
I ran outside today and boy, it's getting chilly!! I figure I will be able to run outside tomorrow and then.what.snow!!!! oh no. On my run, I noticed quite a few houses had set out Halloween decorations. One home actually decided it was time for garland and Christmas lights. Whatever. People are strange. Anyways, I returned home a bit chilly, but in the Halloween mood. My mom understands my strange obsession with window clings, and recently bought my some fantastic Halloween window gels. Up they went. Out came the witch magnets and placemat collection. Little pumpkin and ghost buckets are out. I'm ready for the spooks!
Ok. May I vent? Thanks.
I've been scheduling interviews. Holy scary. I have my first interview in WI on Nov 2. Yikes. Soon! I spent some time on orbitz and things are in motion. My credit card is just warming up. I have been speaking with a first year derm resident a lot lately. Yikes. If I have to hear about how much money, or how many boats on lake minnetonka each Mn dermatologist owns for 1 more min, my head might explode.
I guess after 7 years of college+medical school he had the bourgeois itch. Has he ever talked about a desire to look at rashes? Nope. Has he gone out of his way to see derm conditions on newborns? Nope. Do I know his board score? Yep. Do I know the perks of his residency package? Yep. People. Good lord.
I prefer to think about life like this. A good lesson. I do believe this, see #8
This is also a good lesson. Good night ;)

Le Tired
I'm too tired for Marylin tonight. I'm also too tired for cooking. I'll have you know I ate a gourmet dinner of olives, tomatoes and Ice cream. whoa nelly. Not all at once, come on now.
I'll leave you with two very deep pictures. I hope your Saturday night is fantastic. I'm surfing the Internet for pretty pictures. LIVE IT UP!

Ouch: October
It's cold. And Rainy. And October...
I love the rain. I really do. But this is cold-chill you to the bone rain. No thanks.
Cold weather does horrible things to my body.
Pffft. Circulation is over-rated anyways. Only sissy's need to perfuse their extremities. Warning: If this fantastical Raynaud's phenomenon happens to you - do not take a hot shower until blood is pumping on its own. Holy ow!!!! Sting city Arizona.
It seems like fall has made himself official. Brrr. I was a regular Bob Villa this week though. I SINGLE HANDEDLY turned on the radiator heat for my entire building!! Ok, maybe not quite Bob Villa-but I did operate momentarily on a semi functional human level. That is not always possible for me fyi. Normal life things, wow.
Anyways. I'm pre-call tonight. AGAIN! I know. Sleep overs at Hotel Henne are going to get REAL old. I'm going to practice mild-mind calming techniques. Such as: finding pretty quotes online and watching trashy reality tv. I spend the day in the nursery tomorrow, then admit whatever all night long. I'm not actually sure what I will end up doing Saturday. Either nursery exams or PICU. Lets hope its nursery!! That's actually kind of fun. Newborns are SO tiny, they don't cry very loud, and they don't smell! It's been really fun to round in the am. I go get the baby from mom, talk to her for a bit to see how things are going, take the baby to the nursery for an exam and then bring the baby back. Baby back, baby back... I want my baby back, baby back... Hennepin nursery rounds! I'm done.
Anyways, I'll examine hips and test suck reflexes all day, deal with what comes my way overnight (and honest to God bring thigh high socks and a humungo sweater for my Antarctica call room) then have the rest of the weekend off! I'm thinking channeling Marilyn will be in order Sat night. And by channeling Marylin I mean, I'm blond and might wear red lip gloss bowling !!! woot. Live it up:)
